A Christian take on Rap music…

What happens when something that you have been passionate about since your early youth comes into direct conflict with your new found beliefs as a Christian?  That’s a dilemma that Steve Feld faced soon after turning his life over to Christ.

Being a long time fan of Rap & Hip Hop Music, Steve became boldly convicted of the unGodly content that was shamelessly promoted by his favorite genre. “What would God think of this song?” was a question that ran through Steve’s head virtually every time he pushed play. There was a real struggle between wanting to remain a fan of the music that essentially served as the soundtrack of his life for over fourteen years, and between wanting to please God.

Then something amazing happened. Steve stumbled upon another Christian’s MySpace page, which featured a Hip Hop song that latched onto Steve’s ear drums almost instantaneously. But something was different about this song… instead of glorifying sin, the song had a strong message which glorified God. “The beat and the overall rhyme scheme was excellent as well” Steve recalls.

Needless to say, Steve was ecstatic about the find. After digging deeper into the artist’s track list, it was clear that there was something to this “Christian Rap Music.”  Soon, Steve’s MP3 player was stocked with tracks from dozens of other Christian Rappers. “My appetite for Mainstream Rap & Hip Hop plummeted when I discovered just how superb the Christian alternative was… not only in lyrics and in content, but even in terms of the production and the beats. I truly believe that God has blessed many of these Christian artists with skills and abilities that would otherwise be nonexistent apart from him.”

Steve challenges other Christian’s to ask a simple and yet powerful question: “Is the music that you listen to for God, or against God?”
